Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Pie – Are you a peanut butter lover? If so, boy, do I have a pie for you. And let me tell ya, it’s a taste buds pleaser.

When Southern Peanut Butter Meringue Pie Meets Amish Peanut Butter Pie

I was familiar with the southern version of old fashioned peanut butter pie growing up. Then, after getting married, I became quickly acquainted with the Amish version of this classic southern pie recipe.

You’re probably wondering what the difference is between the two.

The southern version has a meringue topping like Stacey’s Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Meringue Pie, and the Amish version has a homemade whipped cream topping. And both are sprinkled with the most delicious peanut butter crumbles.

Now, I’m going to let you in on a bit of a secret. Meringue is not my thing. I can take it or leave it. And given a choice, I’ll leave it – except on banana pudding. That’s a different story.

So naturally, the homemade whipped cream was a win-win for me, and the Amish version of the peanut butter pie became my new favorite.

What Is Old-Fashioned Peanut Butter Pie?

This peanut butter pie is a dessert made using a traditional pie crust.

Keep in mind there are several varieties of old fashioned peanut butter pie, but this particular one is a peanut butter custard pie. It has a delicious custard filling with homemade whipped cream and fantastic peanut butter crumbles.

I’m pretty reluctant to brag on a recipe as being the “best,” but I promise I’m not exaggerating when I tell you this pie fits the description.

It’s possibly the best peanut butter pie recipe (of the custard types) you could choose to make in your cozy kitchen. So go ahead and give it a try, and then you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Because this old fashioned peanut butter pie uses ingredients you probably already have on hand, it’s the perfect “panty pie.”

This is one of those pies you can make without going to the market for unique ingredients. Especially if you make the pie crust from scratch.

After looking at the ingredients list below, you’ll see what I mean.

What Kind of Pie Crust Should I Use?

You can keep it convenient and use a pre-made frozen pie crust. Follow the instructions on pre-baking the crust before filling it.

Deep Dish or Regular Pie Crust?

Good question. This recipe makes a deep-dish pie. But if you’d like, you can follow the recipe and use a regular crust instead.

Since you’ll have extra filling, you can use the leftover custard as a dessert. Simply serve it in individual servings sprinkled with – you guessed it – those yummy peanut butter crumbles.

You will need to make extra crumbles if you decide to go this route.

How Do I Layer This Pie?

Here’s What You’ll Do

01.

If using a homemade crust, shape crust into pie pan and bake.

Store the covered pie for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. However, I don’t recommend freezing this pie due to the custard and whipped cream layers.

You list 3 tbsp of butter in the recipe but do not mention it in the instructions.

I made this recipe and it was delicious! I didn’t see in the directions, however, dividing the milk. The second time I made the recipe I put some of the milk with the egg, sugar and corn starch. It made mixing a lot easier. Is this recipe for one pie or two? It makes a lot of filling. No complaints, it is really terrific.

    1. Hi Nancy! I’m so glad you loved the pie! The recipe is for one pie, but you’re right. It does make an ample amount of filling. It might be possible to make two smaller pies with it, but I’ve never tried it. Thanks so much for stopping by, and Happy New Year.
