Old Fashioned Peanut Butter Pie (A From-Scratch Amish Favorite)

From-scratch custard pie with a smooth, creamy texture topped with a homemade whipped cream layer and delicious peanut butter crumbles.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 pie shell (deep dish) pre-baked
  • 4 cup milk divided
  • 1 cup sugar divided
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 4 egg yolks beaten
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 ½ tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp salt

Peanut Butter Crumbles:

  • 2/3 cup peanut butter
  • 1 ½ cup powdered sugar

Instructions
 

  • In a saucepan heat milk, butter, and 1/2 cup of sugar.
  • Mix beaten egg yolks, remaining sugar, and cornstarch.
  • Add egg mixture to milk and low boil until thickened, stirring constantly.
  • Add vanilla and salt; cool custard
  • Put peanut butter crumbs in bottom of baked pie crusts, reserving some for topping.
  • Pour custard on crumbs and top with whipped cream.
  • Sprinkle with remaing crumbs.

Peanut Butter Crumbles:

  • Make crumbs by mixing peanut butter and powdered sugar using a fork or a pastry blender.
  • Chill pie 3-4 hours before serving

Notes

Be sure to stir the custard mixture continuously until it has thickened. It will burn quickly.
