Thanks, Cindy! We debated which way to do it and decided to go this route and love how it looks. The cracks in the wood add a lot of character. :)

I need to do this to our own fireplace soon! We made the kind with wood slices attached to plywood and have a mantle included with it for our shop. The wood slices cracked some as well but it looks great!
You will be ready for the fall with dried kindling right at the fireplace!
