In this post: A recipe for Barbecued Green Beans – one of our favorite side dishes
As I opened the door, the smell of chicken cooking in the crockpot made me stop. I let out a deep sigh as I walked into the kitchen, realizing I hadn’t planned anything to go with it! But after being gone all day running errands, there’s no way I’m going back out.
So, I went into the panty and scanned the shelves. Could I make something out of oatmeal, capers, and canned tuna? Not likely. Then I spotted our family cookbook. I quickly flipped through the pages until I found a recipe for a side dish that used ingredients I already had. It was barbecued green beans for the win!
What are these barbecued green beans I speak of?
Canned green beans made delicious by adding a rustic homemade barbecue sauce that’s poured over the beans before baking. This recipe takes canned beans to a whole new level.
What’s in barbecued green beans?
- Canned green beans – Yep, canned but you’ll never know.
- Brown sugar
- Worcestershire sauce
A quick tip: To save time, I use precooked bacon. I still cook it in a skillet to make it crispy. And it tastes great.
Can this side dish be made ahead of time?
You bet! Throw the barbecued green beans together the night before, stick them in the fridge and bake them for supper the next evening.
I’d love to take credit for this recipe. But the truth is, my nephew (in-law) grew up eating these beans and lucky for the rest of us shared them in our family cookbook.
Note: I doubled the recipe in this post.

These beans are a breeze to make for a weeknight meal. But they’re perfect for cookouts and holidays too. Take them to a church potluck, and you’ll bring home an empty dish.
Thanks to the family cookbook, two lingering cans of green beans, and a few pantry staples – dinner was served, and I didn’t have to leave the house.
Be blessed, friend!
